Albrecht Zummach lives in Cologne as a composer and musician as well as a lecturer for guitar and ukulele. In his youth, he learned to play the guitar as an autodidact and was particularly interested in the music of Hanns Eisler. He began his musical career as a singer-songwriter. From 1978 to 1982, Zummach studied classical guitar at the Hochschule für Musik in Cologne. These different areas became formative for his composing.

In 1984, he founded the chanson trio “Zinnober” with lyricist/singer Joe Knipp and vibraphonist Clemens Dreyer, and since the late 1980s, Zummach has mainly been involved in the composition of solo and ensemble works and stage music. He worked for several years on the board of the Cologne Society for New Music (KGNM) and was significantly involved in numerous concert projects. Together with John McAlpine, he directed the Projektensemble 05 and was commissioned by the KGNM to create an annual large-scale contemporary work for the Cologne Music Night with the equal participation of amateurs and professional musicians.

Zummach initiated the concert series Stationen in the New Music working group of the Landesmusikrat NRW, which he has been the overall coordinator of since 2012. In 2013, he founded the Cologne Contemporary Ukulele Ensemble – CQ, the only known ukulele ensemble for contemporary music to date.
